Dear Mr. President:
As a business owner in Hawai‘i, I join a broad-based coalition of supporters to encourage you to take action to extend the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument boundary to the full 200 nautical mile limit of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands exclusive economic zone (EEZ) – excluding the waters surrounding Ni‘ihau and Kaua‘i, and two weather buoys important to local pono fishers.
As business owners, we absolutely focus on the financial bottom line. We recognize that Hawai‘i’s ability to maintain our global reputation as an ecotourism destination with clean water, beautiful beaches, and healthy coral reefs with vibrant marine life requires an investment in safeguarding our natural riches into the future. Expanding Papahānaumokuākea makes economic and environmental sense to us, but we also support this effort with respect to our host culture and their relationship to the biocultural resources of this area.
For our Native Hawaiian community, the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands are where life began, as recited in the kumulipo, the creation chant, and where ancestors return to upon passing. They believe that natural resources are cultural resources, and we couldn’t agree more. New research is now showing how incredibly unique and important these resources are for all of Hawai‘i, and around the world.
Expanding the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument is the single biggest step you can take to leave a historical legacy for future generations.
Mahalo for your consideration.
